Clean Microwave Stains with Vinegar and Lemon, No Chemicals

Cleaning a microwave can be a frustrating chore, but a simple hack using two common kitchen ingredients can make it easier. Instead of relying on chemical cleaners, vinegar and lemon juice can effectively remove stubborn stains without scrubbing.

How the Steam Cleaning Method Works

The method, shared on TikTok by America's Test Kitchen, involves placing a microwave-safe bowl or measuring jug with water, vinegar, and lemon juice inside the microwave. The account, which has 962,500 followers, instructed: "Add one quarter cup tap water, one quarter cup distilled vinegar and a spritz of fresh lemon juice. Put it in your microwave and run it on full power for seven minutes. When the liquid heats up, it steams and that softens dried on messes."

After the timer finishes, it is important to leave the liquid inside for a few more minutes. The account continued: "Remove it carefully, now you can wipe it down with a towel or sponge. Easy peasy. The aides in the vinegar and lemon neutralises any smell and gives your microwave a nice scent. Now it's fresh and clean."

This works because the boiling liquid evaporates and condenses on the internal surfaces, loosening grease and burnt-on food residue. It also eliminates unpleasant smells, leaving the appliance fresh.

Other Uses and Safety Precautions

The method allows you to clean the microwave while doing other tasks. Vinegar and lemon are also effective for descaling kettles and coffee machines, removing soap scum, and cleaning glass surfaces, as their acids break down mineral deposits and grime.

However, these ingredients should not be used on natural stone, waxed or solid wood, cast iron, chrome, or electronic screens. They should never be mixed with chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide, as this can produce toxic gases. Lemon can be used on wooden chopping boards, as its antibacterial qualities and high citric acid content help prevent harmful bacteria growth.
