A 66-year-old man from Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, has had his leg amputated below the knee after a radiator fell on his foot, an injury he claims was not properly treated by hospital staff. John Traynor, who was moving the radiator last month, says he visited Monklands Hospital twice and saw his GP, but was sent home each time with assurances there was nothing to worry about.
Mr Traynor later suffered a mini-stroke and was readmitted to hospital, where doctors discovered septicaemia had set in. Within days, his right leg was amputated below the knee. He believes the amputation could have been avoided if medical staff had acted sooner. 'I knew something was wrong at the start and feel Monklands should have treated me then,' he said.
The father of three, who now requires home alterations including a chairlift and wet room, says he is not seeking financial compensation from the NHS but simply wants an apology. 'I used to be an active person. Now, I'm caged up like a monkey,' he added. Mr Traynor is recovering at home and says he has lost all faith in Monklands Hospital.
