Solar security camera 'easy to set up' with 'really good image quality' cheaper than Ring Doorbell
Solar security camera cheaper than Ring Doorbell

Amazon has reduced the Septekon 2K Solar Security Camera to £44.99, down from £49.98, making it cheaper than popular alternatives such as Ring's doorbell cameras. The wire-free gadget runs on a rechargeable battery and solar panel, allowing it to operate continuously with adequate sunlight without frequent connection to a power source.

The camera captures footage in 2K resolution and is equipped with both infrared and white lights for colour night vision. It boasts a horizontal rotation of 345 degrees and 90 degrees vertically, providing an impressively broad field of view, while its waterproof rating ensures it is built to endure rain, snow and extreme heat.

Features and setup

A PIR motion sensor identifies movement and is capable of sending immediate alerts when human activity is picked up. It can capture video and audio footage too while activating its siren and spotlight to help ward off unwelcome guests. It links to properties via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (5GHz isn't compatible) and provides two storage options for captured footage, while the wire-free construction simplifies installation.

The camera has received a 4.3 rating on Amazon. One customer commented: "It's solar, so no charging, fantastic product." Another said: "Great camera. A very impressive solar panel keeps the camera charged to 100 per cent. Image quality is really good, and I love the feature that the camera follows an object or person that it captures in the frame. The app is easy to use and works well."

Shopper feedback and alternatives

A third reviewer echoed: "I have been trialling this for about a month. So good that the family bought another two - simple to use and set up." One individual docked a star, noting: "Works well, easy to fix up and good picture - great to be able to adjust via the phone. But shame it doesn't link to Alexa, and the instructions were small and hard to read." A further customer commented: "Great quality image and product, solar and batteries are working well so far. The only issue is that the app can freeze, and selecting app icons often requires a number of attempts."

Alternatively, the Ring Battery Video Doorbell has been reduced from £79.99 to £44.99 on Amazon. It's available in three colours: grey, mocha (brown) or white, and guarantees 'crisp clarity' with 2K video and 6x zoom. There's also the TD21 Smart Battery Video Doorbell + Chime from Tapo, which is currently on offer at £44.99. It delivers up to six months of battery life, is reported to 'provide finer details and clarity' during operation and features a 160-degree ultra-wide view.
