A home security expert has issued a warning to Britons ahead of the festive season, highlighting common mistakes that could lead to burglaries. Beth Priestley, from Toolstation, shared eight tips to protect homes while away during Christmas, as a study reveals a burglary occurs every 108 seconds in the UK, with incidents rising in winter.
Priestley advised against placing Christmas gifts under the tree, as they can be visible to thieves through windows. “For potential thieves looking through the window, it shows exactly where potentially expensive, resellable items are,” she explained. Additionally, parcels left on doorsteps signal that the house is unoccupied.
The expert noted that 43 percent of burglars know their victims and live nearby, so she recommended avoiding discussing holiday plans with anyone except close friends and family. She also warned that around 25 percent of burglars enter through unlocked doors or windows, urging homeowners to check all entry points before leaving.
Other tips included setting alarms, avoiding posting about trips on social media until returning home, and using plug-in timers to make the house appear occupied. Priestley also suggested asking a trusted neighbour to check on the property if away for an extended period.
