Withings BodyFit smart scales review: premium health tech for athletes

The Withings BodyFit smart scales go beyond basic weight tracking, offering six-zone body composition scans and more than 40 measurements. Priced at over £200, they target athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and those serious about losing weight.

Setup and app experience

Before use, the scales must be linked to the Withings app. The app is described as excellent, with a polished user interface that is easy to follow and reliable.

Once you step onto the tempered-glass platform, a retractable handle provides a six-zone scan of the left and right arms, left and right legs, torso, and abdomen. This shows where fat and muscle are distributed in the body, rather than just reporting overall body-fat percentage.

Measurements and precision

The scales provide more than 40 measurements and insights, including body fat, muscle mass, bone mass, water, lean mass, visceral fat, BMR, and vascular measurements. Weight is measured in 50g increments, with a range from 5kg to 200kg.

Withings' Position Control technology helps ensure consistent readings, and up to eight people can be automatically recognised. The 300mm-square platform is compact, with a reinforced aluminium chassis and high-strength glass. A colour LCD displays key information directly on the scale.

Subscription and battery

To get the most out of the device, a subscription to Withings+ is required, costing almost £90 a year. The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for up to a year between charges, and the scale can store up to 16 readings if it cannot connect to the network.

The sheer amount of information can feel overwhelming, and users may become fixated on individual numbers that naturally fluctuate. The BodyFit is most useful when measurements are considered over weeks and months, rather than as definitive readings each time.

The Withings BodyFit is one of the most advanced smart scales on the market, with an impressive app to match. For the average person, it is probably overkill, but for fitness fans who can afford it, smart scales could change their lives. It is available on the Withings website for £229.95.
