Ubisoft is reportedly planning to implement generative AI across all its video game output, according to a report by Insider Gaming. The initiative, called Motherbrain, is described in an internal announcement as 'a global entity dedicated to supporting gameplay innovation across the group.'
Motherbrain initiative details
The report says Motherbrain is not a newly built AI tool but rather an initiative to push and innovate on genAI technology. The internal announcement states: 'The team [Motherbrain] will continue to develop proprietary AI technology and middleware dedicated to generative gameplay, which will serve as a shared foundation across our studios.'
Motherbrain will be spearheaded by Xavier Manzanares, who served as lead producer on the Mario + Rabbids games at Ubisoft Milan and has since become R&D director and producer for 'player facing generative AI.'
Ubisoft's AI history and current challenges
Ubisoft announced an AI writing tool in 2023, which it said it would not use to replace writers. The company has also embraced live service games, blockchain technology, and NFTs. Ubisoft needed a bailout from Tencent last year and cancelled six games earlier this year. The company has hyped up plans for genAI as part of a wider restructuring.
Capcom's more restrained approach
In related news, Capcom has promised further use of AI and will be incorporating it into its RE Engine, according to a report by Japanese outlet GameBiz. However, the wording is vague, only talking about improving efficiency and 'streamlining future development.' Capcom has previously said it has no interest in incorporating AI-made assets into games.
