Wrexham chief executive Mike Williamson says competition from other clubs has been a key factor behind their relatively quiet transfer window this summer.
After a return to the second tier brought some 13 new recruits on board last summer, business has been more subdued this time around. Just three new signings have arrived to help strengthen a side many have tipped as play-off contenders this season.
Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, wing-back Danny Imray and midfielder Ben Whiteman have all joined, but head coach Phil Parkinson may well be hoping for a few more before the window closes on September 1.
Mehmeti linked with move to North Wales
According to the Daily Mail, the North Wales outfit are keen on Ipswich Town's Anis Mehmeti.
The attacking midfielder only joined the Premier League side in the winter, but after Ipswich signed a raft of new players to help with their top flight push, Mehmeti appears to have fallen down the pecking order. He was left out of the squad for their opening day win over Sunderland.
Whether that deal will get done remains to be seen, but Williamson admits this window has perhaps been more challenging given the calibre of player they're now hunting.
Williamson: We're competing with big clubs
"Going into the transfer market this summer we said we would look to add some quality, not quantity," Williamson told Radio Wales Sport before Saturday's draw against the Hornets.
"We have the foundations of a really strong Championship squad, so knew what we needed to be competitive and make a bit of a difference."
"We've been going after it but what happens is that the players we are after are top-quality players," he added. "It's about finding that quality and there are a few more pieces we want to bring in, but at times we are competing against some other big clubs out there."
"It's not just the Premier League and top-end Championship clubs but those in the top five of leagues around Europe. That's who Wrexham are today – we are not looking to bring in just an average player, we are looking to bring in players who are recruited at the very top level."
Next up for Wrexham
Wrexham continue their Championship campaign by taking on Birmingham City at the Racecourse for a Friday night kick-off.
They began their league season with a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City on the opening weekend, with Rubin Colwill's late freekick cancelling out Kieffer Moore's early opener.
