Skier killed as gondola detaches and rolls down Swiss mountain

A 61-year-old woman has died after a gondola detached from its cable and rolled down a snow-covered slope at the Titlis ski resort in central Switzerland. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Engelberg, a village in the canton of Obwalden.

Dramatic footage shows the cabin tumbling down the mountainside, flipping several times as horrified onlookers watched. 'It just came off the cable and started rolling,' a witness said. Rescue workers attempted to resuscitate the victim for around 30 minutes, but she died at the scene.

The woman was the only passenger in the gondola at the time of the crash. Police confirmed her identity later that day. Strong winds with gusts exceeding 80 km/h were reported in the area, and some lifts at the resort had remained open despite the weather.

Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were scrambled to the scene. Images show the crumpled carriage at the bottom of the slope and a person being carried away by responders. The crash occurred shortly after 11am local time (10.30am GMT).

The incident follows a similar accident in Italy in December 2025, when a cable car slammed into a station barrier, injuring six people and leaving around 100 stranded. The Titlis ski area, which features 82km of slopes and rises to 3,238 metres, has temporarily closed the affected lift pending investigation.
