Katie Swan Wins at Wimbledon 2026 as Boulter Exits Early
Swan Wins at Wimbledon 2026, Boulter Out Early

On the second day of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, Katie Swan secured Britain's first singles victory of the tournament, defeating Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-4 on Court 16. The wildcard entry ended a dismal opening day where all 10 British players who completed their matches were beaten.

Swan's Composed Performance

Swan, 27, was making her first Wimbledon appearance in three years after persistent back injuries threatened her career. In a tight first set, neither player created a break point until the 10th game, when Swan forced Begu into an error during a long rally and served out the set to love.

The Briton carried momentum into the second set, breaking with a delicate cross-court drop shot. She remained untouchable on serve, dropping just one point in her first three service games and never facing a break point. Begu saved four match points before Swan sealed the victory, punching the air in celebration.

Boulter's Shock Exit

Later, Katie Boulter suffered a surprise first-round defeat to 18-year-old qualifier Tyra Caterina Grant, losing 6-4, 6-2 on Court Three. Boulter had shown strong form at Queen's but struggled against Grant, who was making her Grand Slam main-draw debut after three qualifying wins.

Grant broke Boulter early for a 2-1 lead with aggressive baseline play. She served superbly, winning key points behind her second serve and repeatedly attacking Boulter's delivery. Boulter failed to create a single break point in the first set, which Grant won 6-4.

In the second set, Boulter's first-serve percentage dropped to 44%, with three double faults. Grant held to love with a blistering forehand winner, looking at ease throughout. The Italian secured her biggest win by ranking, leaving Boulter as another early British exit.
