Road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect across Southport this weekend as the town prepares to host its annual air show. The family-friendly event returns with a packed schedule of aerial displays on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30.
The iconic RAF Red Arrows will be making a return to the show this year after being absent last year, alongside a Battle of Britain memorial flight, RAF Typhoon and many more appearances over the weekend. The show is expected to attract over 100,000 visitors, and as a result, a number of road closures have been announced.
Road closures and timings
The first of these closures will see Marine Drive and Coastal Road closed from 10am on Wednesday, August 26, to 11.59pm on Monday, August 31. On Saturday and Sunday, the road closures on the street will be extended all the way to Fairway roundabout in the north and the Weld Road roundabout at the south end.
Parking restrictions and alternatives
Parking restrictions have also been put in place around coastal areas in Southport at those times. There will be no parking in any of the following areas: Palace Road, Blandford Close, Westcliffe Road, Esplanade, Kingswood Park, Promenade, Fairway, Castle Walk, Victoria Way, Camberley Close, Ascot Close, Rotten Row, Weld Road.
Parking will be available at Princess Park, Victoria Park and Marine Drive car park on the day. The organisers of the show are advising visitors to stop following their Sat Nav when they see the yellow event and steward signs and follow them for parking.
Travel tips and tickets
Merseyrail is also offering a special discounted fare of £2 for an adult return and £1 for a child return to Southport from any station network, with Southport train station only a 10 minute walk from the beach. Regular traffic updates will also be broadcast by local radio stations and Dune Radio.
Tickets are available for both days, starting from £14.56 for a single day general admission. Family and group tickets are also available at better value prices, with children under 16 free to attend. Tickets can be purchased on the SeeTickets site.
