Sam Kerr Returns to NWSL, Joins Gotham FC

Sam Kerr is returning to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) after signing a contract with Gotham FC through 2030, the club announced on Monday. The 32-year-old Australian striker spent the past six and a half years with Chelsea, where she won 11 major trophies.

Kerr's NWSL Legacy

Kerr previously played in the NWSL for Sky Blue (now Gotham) from 2015 to 2017 and later for the Chicago Red Stars before moving to Chelsea in November 2019. Despite her absence, she remains the NWSL's all-time leading regular-season scorer with 77 goals, having led the league in scoring for three consecutive seasons from 2017 to 2019. She also won the league's MVP awards in 2017 and 2019.

International Stardom

Kerr is the all-time leading scorer for Australia, men or women, with 75 goals, surpassing Tim Cahill's 51. She captained the Matildas to the semi-finals of the 2023 Women's World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Kerr is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world and is the only player to have won a Golden Boot in three different leagues.

Statement from Kerr

“I’m incredibly excited to return to Gotham FC and to this city,” Kerr said in a statement. “This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special. The ambition here is clear, and I’m looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history.”

Gotham's Ambitions

Gotham won the NWSL title in 2023 and 2024. The team's roster includes several of Kerr's former Chelsea teammates, such as German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger and England defender Jess Carter, as well as World Cup winners Esther González and Rose Lavelle. Yael Averbuch West, Gotham FC's president of soccer operations, said: “Sam is one of the defining players of her generation and a game-changing talent who has consistently delivered at the highest levels of world football. Her winning mentality, relentless competitiveness and ability to decide matches in an instant make her one of the most impactful players in the game. Bringing Sam back to Gotham is a landmark moment for our club, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

Return from Injury

Kerr recently returned from a 20-month layoff due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, scoring 17 goals last season for Chelsea. During her time at Chelsea, she scored 65 goals in the Women's Super League, winning the league's Golden Boot twice. She tallied 116 goals in all competitions, tying Chelsea's all-time leading scorer Fran Kirby, and won five consecutive WSL titles, three consecutive FA Cups, and three League Cups.
