Newcastle United progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion at St James' Park. Amar Dedic delivered a man-of-the-match display, earning a perfect 10 rating, while substitute Harvey Barnes scored twice to seal the win.
Maggies fight back after early scare
Newcastle started brightly but could not find a way past West Brom goalkeeper Matt Ingram. The visitors took a shock lead when Isaac Price curled a 25-yard free-kick low past debutant goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen after Sean Steur had fouled Jimmy-Jay Morgan.
Newcastle levelled on 38 minutes when Steur played the ball out to Dedic, whose cross was turned in by Bazoumana Toure. The sides went in level at the break, but Newcastle made a strong start to the second half.
Barnes double seals the tie
Harvey Barnes' stinging effort was deflected before Malick Thiaw poked the ball into his path, and the substitute made no mistake. West Brom levelled from the penalty spot with 13 minutes remaining, but Barnes struck again four minutes later to restore Newcastle's lead.

Ewen Jaouen 7 - Slightly questionable on the opening goal as he got down too late. Made a fine late save from Molumby's effort.
Amar Dedic 10 - Another rock-solid display from the ex-Benfica full-back, with two assists. Tino Livramento may struggle to get his place back at this rate.
Malick Thiaw 8 - Led the team with authority, making a host of interceptions and recoveries.
Sven Botman 7 - Had some nervous moments against a Championship attack.
Lewis Hall 6 - Blotted his copybook with a handball to concede a second penalty in a few days. Unfortunate to hit the post.
Jacob Ramsey 7 - A dominant role in midfield as he set the tone. Almost slipped in Hall for a goal, but his effort hit the post.
Sean Steur 8 - Looks a real find from Ajax. Showed commitment with the challenge that led to West Brom's goal but recovered to play a part in the equaliser. Not daunted by the big stage.
Bazouma Toure 7 - A well-taken finish to tie things up, but was taken off at half-time. Hugged the left-hand touchline in the first period.
Jacob Murphy 5 - On a night when Woltemade was in dire need of good service, he failed to deliver.
Joe Willock 7 - Started well and forced plenty of early pressure. No goal heroics today, but his future hangs in the balance as Besiktas weigh up a late window offer. Created some danger as a number 10 but did not threaten quite enough.
Nick Woltemade 6 - While others enjoyed good service, nothing clicked for the German international. Played a part in the third goal with a pass from deep, but a lack of hunger to get into scoring positions is a concern.
