Newcastle United players were called over to the dugout for an impromptu change of kit during their home friendly with Bayer Leverkusen. The switch came after head coach Matthias Jaissle spotted a colour clash early in the Vist Malta Cup game at St James' Park.
Kit clash spotted early
Eyebrows had been raised as the two teams walked out, with Leverkusen sporting a light blue shirt and Newcastle's home shirts having a large white panel on the back. Although referee Michael Oliver had given the kits the go ahead, it was obvious there was a clash early in the game.
Observers in the Press box had noted a possible colour clash, something that appeared to be spotted by Jaissle and his staff. When the teams went for a hydration break, Jaissle turned around to his kit men and pulled at his own shirt asking for a change in colour.
Players switch to third kit
Newcastle players dumped their new home kit on 24 minutes and pulled on the new third kit to play out the rest of the first half in a different colour.
Similar incident in Premier League history
Manchester United also did something similar in 1996 when Sir Alex Ferguson complained a grey away kit clashed with the backdrop of the home fans at Southampton during a 3-1 defeat. That day Man United ditched the grey shirts for blue and white at half-time at the old Dell in one of the most bizarre moments in Premier League history.
