Man Utd unveils new supporter zone with stage and food trucks

Manchester United has unveiled plans for a new 'family friendly' supporter zone at its Old Trafford grounds. The space would feature a stage, food trucks, bars and seating for those with match tickets, according to planning documents.

Location and capacity

The fenced-off area is proposed to be built on what is currently disabled car parking next to the Stretford End of the stadium and would have room for 1,300 people. The club has said it would be an area for 'all to enjoy' with entertainment showcasing 'local talent and club legends'.

The zone is expected to feature two bars, the stage and a retail kiosk in shipping-style containers in club colours; three food trucks; and toilets. A 'stretch tent' would cover part of the space, with tables and seating beneath it and spilling into the wider zone.

Matchday operations and security

Entrance would be controlled, with designated queuing areas also proposed. It would also have a 'no bag' policy, with security on hand to carry out searches if required. The space would only be in use on matchdays, with Man U saying it would 'typically' open for three to four hours prior to kick off and for two hours post-match for daytime fixtures. Hours would be reduced for evening games, the club added.

On non-matchdays, the food trucks and barriers would be stored away, furniture gathered under the covered area, and the stage and bar containers locked, plans state.

Parking and planning approval

Some 22 parking spaces would be lost to the new zone, but the club has said it already 'provides more parking spaces than is required for the stadium's capacity' and does not believe the new use would 'give rise to any severe highway impact'.

Documents added: “The proposed scheme will provide a family friendly destination to enjoy food, drink and entertainment on a match day, before and after a game.” Plans have been submitted to Trafford council for approval and will be determined in due course.
