Manchester United are in talks with Feyenoord over a loan deal for forward Chido Obi, according to Dutch publication De Telegraaf. The 18-year-old is expected to leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.
Loan move expected
The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this month that Obi is expected to depart on loan before the deadline. The young striker has previously attracted interest from German club FC Koln.
Obi moved to United from Arsenal in 2024, arriving as one of the country's brightest prospects due to his prolific goal-scoring in the youth ranks. Feyenoord are preparing for their first campaign under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who replaced former United forward Robin van Persie in the summer, despite guiding the club into this season's Champions League.
Surprise move
The report from De Telegraaf notes that the move for Obi is surprising given Van Bronckhorst already has 19-year-old Shaqueel van Persie, son of Robin, in his squad behind strikers Ayase Ueda and Iganacio Ferri.
Obi made seven senior appearances in 2024/25, but Ruben Amorim said he was exposed to first-team football too soon due to injuries in the squad. He was only included in a Premier League matchday squad for two games last season.
Amorim's defence
However, Amorim namechecked Obi when hitting back at suggestions he is reluctant to use the club's academy talents. Speaking in December last year, he said: "He (Toby Collyer) played (for the United first team). He's from the academy. He played here. He went to West Bromwich.
"He's not playing. He played for Manchester United. So sometimes it's not because he's from the academy or whatever. It's the situation, what's happened. I don't know what is going to be the future (for Kobbie Mainoo). Let's see after this match.
"Amass is now struggling in the Championship. Chido (Obi) is not always a starter in under 21s. All these guys played when a lot of people were saying sack the manager!"
Mount's praise
Speaking about Obi last year, following the pre-season friendly against Hong Kong, Mason Mount said: "Chido is a very good player. I haven't played with him loads but, obviously, you can see in training what he's about, his good movement as a player.
"As a 10, you want to try to give balls into the box for him to get on the end of. I saw him and he's a threat with a ball in the air for a header on goal. That was my aim. But all the young kids who played today, I thought stepped up in difficult circumstances. They all performed really well so I'm really happy for them as well."
