Man United confirm Jayce Fitzgerald loan exit to Rotherham

Manchester United have confirmed that Jayce Fitzgerald has left the club to join Rotherham on loan for the season.

The 19-year-old midfielder made 16 appearances in Premier League 2 last season as the Under-21s reached the final of that competition. He has also won the Under-18 Premier League and Under-18 Premier League Cup during his time with his boyhood club.

Three first-team matchday squads

Salford-born Fitzgerald was an unused substitute on three occasions for United during Ruud van Nistelrooy's spell in the dugout as interim manager; for the 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, a 1-1 Premier League draw with Chelsea and a 2-0 victory over Greek side PAOK Salonika in the Europa League.

In a statement on their website, United wrote: "Young Manchester United midfielder Jayce Fitzgerald has agreed to join Rotherham United on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old was a regular for our Under-21s last term, making 16 appearances in Premier League 2 as the Reds reached the final.

"Fitzgerald has previously represented our Under-18s too, having joined the club at a young age, and featured in three first-team matchday squads during the 2024/25 campaign. He joins South Yorkshire outfit Rotherham where former United youth player Alex Bruce has taken charge as head coach this summer, after former Reds assistant Steve McClaren arrived as the club's head of football in May.

Third United youngster to join Rotherham

"We wish Jayce the best of luck for this season and will be keeping a close eye on his progress."

Fitzgerald is the third United youngster to head to Rotherham on loan in recent seasons. Although injuries halted Gabriele Biancheri's development, Dan Gore was named Rotherham's player of the season after his spell there last term.

Fitzgerald spoke to Gore about his experience at the club before signing on the dotted line.
