Hearts await Conference League group stage fate after rivals exit

Hearts are the last Scottish Premiership club standing in the UEFA Conference League after Rangers, Motherwell and Hibernian all exited at the play-off stage. Wouter Vrancken's side secured their place in the group phase with a penalty shootout win over Rapid Vienna in Austria.

Historic European night in Vienna

The Jambos became the first of all 36 teams to book their spot in the group stage of UEFA's third tier competition. The victory came despite playing with 10 men after Tomas Magnusson's sending off, with Hearts winning the shootout after a dramatic extra time.

Calvin Miller produced what he called the best night of his football career, scoring a scissor kick to give Hearts a 2-1 lead in extra time before Rapid's late equaliser. He then converted the first penalty in the shootout, despite struggling with cramp in both legs.

Miller on the pain and glory

Miller admitted he could barely move but refused to let his team-mates down. Speaking after the match, he said: "When you see your team-mates digging in, giving everything, you get a real sense of belief when everybody's putting a shift in. Being down to 10 men, everybody's helping each other."

He added: "The pitch was horrendous. It was the sandiest pitch I've ever been on. It was so heavy and usually I cramp my calves, but it was my groins. At one point I genuinely couldn't move. But I'm so thankful that I stayed on and managed to get through - and score as well. It's just been the best night of my life so far in football."
