A 59-year-old man has died after falling ill during the Hibs vs Partick Thistle match at Easter Road in Edinburgh on Sunday, August 16. Emergency services, including Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service, were called to the stadium just half an hour after kick-off.
Man pronounced dead at the scene
The alarm was raised around 2.30pm when police received a report of a man having taken unwell within the stadium. The man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency crews.
One Hibs fan who attended the Scottish League Cup clash said: "Someone passed away at our game on Sunday against Partick Thistle. Thought are with the family from a Hibs fan. Very young not to come home from a game."
No suspicious circumstances
There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.30pm on Sunday, 16 August, 2026 police received a report of a man having taken unwell within Easter Road Stadium, Edinburgh. Emergency services attended and a 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
Match and tribute details
Thousands packed out Easter Road on Sunday afternoon as the home side edged past Thistle 1-0 with Owen Elding's first-half goal to reach the Premier Sports Cup last-16. Both clubs have been contacted for comment by the Record.
The tragedy came just days before a Celtic fan died after taking unwell during the Champions League clash against LASK at Parkhead on Wednesday night. A 65-year-old man was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he sadly later died. The death is also not being treated as suspicious.
A Celtic FC spokesperson said: "It is with great sadness that we confirm a supporter passed away after becoming ill during last night’s match at Celtic Park. Our deepest condolences are with his family, and we will offer them our full support at this extremely difficult time." Hundreds of tributes have already poured in for the man from football fans across the country, with Celtic supporters groups flooded with condolences and messages of support for his loved ones.
