Former Manchester United academy product Danny Simpson has come out of retirement to join UAE Second Division club Arabian Falcons as a player-coach. The 39-year-old right-back will link up with former United star Ravel Morrison, who captains the side, and former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who serves as the club's manager.
Simpson's football journey
Simpson graduated from Manchester United's academy and spent five years as a first-team player after joining the squad in 2005. He left Old Trafford in 2010 to join Newcastle United on a permanent deal. The defender went on to win the Premier League title with Leicester City in 2016, a highlight of his career. He also had spells at Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, and Macclesfield before announcing his retirement from professional football in the summer of 2024.
Now, Simpson has reversed that decision and moved to Dubai, where he will also work alongside former Crystal Palace midfielder Jason Puncheon, who is co-owner and head of football operations at Arabian Falcons.
Simpson's motivation for return
Speaking about his move, Simpson explained why he decided to come out of retirement. “The opportunity to join Jonjo and this exciting project was one I couldn’t turn down,” Simpson said. “I still have plenty to offer on the pitch, and I’m looking forward to helping the team achieve its ambitions. The club has a clear plan, and I want to play my part in delivering a successful promotion-winning campaign.”
Arabian Falcons narrowly missed promotion last season, losing in the final five games. Shelvey expressed his delight at securing Simpson's signature. “I’m really pleased to welcome Danny Simpson to Arabian Falcons. After stepping in for the last five games last season and coming so close to promotion, we now have the opportunity to build properly in my first full campaign,” Shelvey said.
Shelvey and Puncheon on Simpson's impact
“Danny is the ideal signing - a Premier League champion with vast experience, leadership, and a winning mentality. He strengthens us immediately on the pitch and will be invaluable in helping develop the squad. This is the start of us building a team I firmly believe can win promotion this season,” Shelvey added.
Puncheon also highlighted what Simpson brings to the club. “This signing sends a strong message about our ambition. Jonjo has already shown what he can do in a short space of time, and with Danny arriving we are building real strength and character in the squad. We are fully focused on making this a successful season and securing promotion to the UAE First Division,” Puncheon said.
