East Kilbride Hiking Club spent a day in the 'Alps' recently – but didn't have to travel too far. Members took on Beinn Narnain and Ben Arthur (commonly known as The Cobbler), two of the mountains in the Arrochar Alps near Loch Long.
High and low level routes
The high levellers took on Narnain's lofty 987m summit, starting at the car park near the head of Loch Long and taking a north-westerly anti-clockwise route circling around the Munro before descending past the well-known Narnain Boulders.
Meanwhile, low levellers pushed themselves to unaccustomed heights as they ascended The Cobbler, itself a respectable Corbett at 887m and only around 27m short of a Munro.
Threading the needle
A bonus for some was the opportunity to 'thread the needle', crawling through a narrow crevice at the top before a tricky short scramble to a narrow platform. Three members took the challenge, one for the first time.
The club certainly couldn't have wished for better hiking conditions, with a light breeze to keep midges away and some sunshine to make for picture-postcard photos.
Social time in Arrochar
An hour's social time in Arrochar completed a fabulous day out in the 'Alps'.
