Birmingham City have revealed designs for a new 62,000-capacity stadium, the Birmingham City Powerhouse, which the Championship club aims to open for the 2030-31 season. The stadium features 12 chimney-like towers inspired by the city's industrial heritage and will be visible up to 40 miles away. One tower will house a lift to Birmingham's highest bar, offering panoramic city views.
Club chair Tom Wagner described the venue as a 'modern-day Colosseum' and said it would put the city and club on a trajectory towards greatness. The stadium will have a retractable roof that opens in 20 minutes and a movable pitch to accommodate NFL, rugby, and concerts. It is part of a £3bn investment in a 60-acre sports quarter less than a mile from St Andrew's.
Wagner acknowledged sceptics with a quip: 'We're spending a lot of time and money on a stadium that will never be built.' The launch event in Digbeth featured a promotional video with Jude Bellingham, Tom Brady, and actor Paul Anderson. Wagner promised the stadium would be a 'football-first' venue with world-class acoustics and fan experience, usable year-round.
