Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to face an even bigger fight to keep his Real Madrid spot next season after the Spanish club announced the signing of Denzel Dumfries. The Netherlands international has joined from Inter Milan in a £17 million deal, signing a four-year contract until June 30, 2030.
Alexander-Arnold's Frustrating Debut Season
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool to join Real Madrid for £10 million last summer, but his debut campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu was marred by injuries and inconsistent form. The 27-year-old struggled to hit top form when fit and found himself battling Dani Carvajal for the right-back slot. However, when Carvajal confirmed he would leave Real at the end of the 2025/26 season, it seemed Alexander-Arnold would become the club's first-choice right-back.
Dumfries Arrives to Challenge
Real Madrid's decision to sign Dumfries has thrown that assumption into doubt. The 30-year-old right-back scored five goals and provided two assists for Inter last season, and his physical, direct style contrasts with Alexander-Arnold's playmaking abilities. Real Madrid confirmed the transfer in a statement: "Real Madrid and Inter Milan have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Denzel Dumfries, who will be linked to our club for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030."
How the Duo Compare
Alexander-Arnold is known for his elite passing range and deep-lying creativity, while Dumfries thrives on athleticism, overlapping runs, and box presence. The more probable outcome is that both players will share right-back responsibilities depending on the opposition and player availability. Dumfries will not join as a backup and will aim to dislodge Alexander-Arnold from the starting XI.
Mourinho's Influence
Alexander-Arnold may have a significant advantage with new Real head coach Jose Mourinho, who is reportedly a huge fan of the England international. In 2019, Mourinho praised Alexander-Arnold and his former Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson: "The two full-backs also have to be Liverpool players, amazing players, Alexander-Arnold and Robertson. Amazing character and personality. Alexander-Arnold is a local boy, Robertson is a Scottish boy that a few years ago was relegated with Hull City. And both they are physical, they are aggressive, they are what I call in football 'the good arrogance', they are not afraid to play, they go forward, they participate in attack."
Looking Ahead
Alexander-Arnold is hoping for a more productive season at Real after missing out on the England squad this summer. Mourinho is keen to bring more silverware back to Madrid, and the competition for the right-back spot will be intense.
