Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Callum Wilson has been in talks with West Ham about his future, just five months after joining the club. The 33-year-old signed a one-year deal in August and has scored four goals in 18 appearances across all competitions, but his place in the side has come under threat following the arrivals of strikers Pablo Felipe and Taty Castellanos.
Wilson started his eighth game of the season in West Ham’s 3-0 defeat to Wolves at the weekend, and Nuno admitted he had spoken with the former Newcastle forward on Monday morning to inform him that his role had changed. “Me and Callum we had a lot of conversations, just 10 minutes ago we were speaking about that situation,” Nuno said. “Two strikers have joined, correct. I personally decided these strikers have joined. Callum is a very experienced man, he’s been in the game for so much time, he knows that his position has changed.”
The Portuguese coach stressed that Wilson remains a West Ham player and could still be needed, but acknowledged uncertainty over what happens next. “If things go, I don’t know where, or what happens, things that goes beyond my decision making, then we can speak about that,” he added. “But until that situation me and Callum we have been very honest about each other and the way we communicate.”
Wilson has previously expressed hopes of returning to the England squad for the World Cup, but his reduced game time at the relegation-threatened club may hinder those ambitions. Nuno said the matter would be revisited at a later date, adding: “Maybe from some time now we will address this issue again, but it is now not the right moment.”
