Tottenham are working to finalise a deal for Manchester City winger Savinho, with a medical expected in the coming days, while talks continue over Omar Marmoush and interest remains in Cody Gakpo. The moves come after a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend of the Premier League season exposed a lack of quality in attack.
Attacking reinforcements targeted
Despite spending £237million on new players this summer, Spurs still have work to do before the transfer window closes on September 1. The loss to Brentford highlighted the need for adjustments in attack, where the side looked particularly lifeless.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side are expected to address this area, with the head coach ideally wanting three attacking signings before the deadline: two wingers and a striker. It is considered feasible that they secure a winger and a striker in the next week, but a third attacking addition looks difficult to pull off.
Savinho close, Marmoush and Gakpo eyed
Spurs have been in talks with Savinho since last summer and last week agreed a deal worth up to £85million for the Brazilian. He was absent from City’s matchday squad for their 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday and is expected to undergo a medical over the coming days.
Spurs also want to add Savinho’s City team-mate Omar Marmoush, who was an unused substitute in the same game. Reports suggest a loan move with a £50m conditional obligation to buy at the end of the season, though as of Monday morning an agreement had not been reached. Cody Gakpo, who scored for Liverpool in a 2-2 draw at Newcastle, is also high on the list of attacking targets, but a deal is expected to be much more difficult. Liverpool are adamant they would need to sign a replacement first, and Gakpo has four years remaining on his contract.
Departures expected
Several players are expected to leave before the deadline. Nineteen-year-old winger Mikey Moore, who started against Brentford, had been expected to leave on loan this summer, with Bundesliga side Koln heavily linked. He has been kept around while the Savinho deal dragged on, but is likely to get the green light to leave on loan once the Brazilian arrives.
Pape Matar Sarr is also expected to leave on a permanent deal, with Galatasaray and Aston Villa among the clubs interested. Richarlison’s future has been cast further into doubt, with De Zerbi admitting during the club’s pre-season tour that the Brazilian striker has thought about leaving this summer. Spurs hold the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months, until 2028, and are expected to hold out for a sizeable transfer fee.
