Tottenham Hotspur have made an approach to sign left-back Andrew Robertson from Liverpool, with the Premier League champions open to letting the Scotland international leave as his contract enters its final five months.
Liverpool respect Robertson's wish to resolve his long-term future quickly, and all parties are keen to expedite a deal as Spurs manager Thomas Frank faces significant injury issues. The loss of Ben Davies to a season-ending ankle fracture has left Tottenham short of experience at left-back, where Djed Spence has been deployed.
Robertson, 31, joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and has won multiple trophies, including two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups. Spurs see him as a proven winner who can also provide leadership, a quality Frank recently highlighted when signing Conor Gallagher.
Destiny Udogie is Tottenham's only other Premier League-proven left-back option, though the club recently signed 19-year-old Brazilian Souza from Santos. Robertson was of interest to Atlético Madrid in the summer but a move did not materialise.
Robertson is eager to maximise playing time before the World Cup, where he will captain Scotland. At Liverpool, he has faced competition from Milos Kerkez. If he departs, he leaves a side that has drawn its last four Premier League games and sits fourth, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the challenges of a tougher season, saying: "I do enjoy it – but I do enjoy winning. The nice part of the job is being creative and getting a gameplan with the players you have available. Maybe you enjoy winning a little bit more when you have been losing."
