Youri Tielemans' release clause was such a closely guarded secret that not even everyone at Aston Villa knew it existed, according to The Athletic. A key figure who worked on the agreement to sign Tielemans from Leicester City was unaware of its presence in the deal.
Manchester United agreed a £35 million transfer for the Belgian midfielder, who has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford. Tielemans helped Villa to Europa League success last term and brings vast Premier League experience, having made 244 appearances in the competition.
Rapid Transfer and Midfield Rebuild
The former Leicester star joins as part of United's midfield rebuild alongside Andrey Santos from Chelsea. The Belgium captain moved in a rapid deal while the club stepped away from a transfer for Atalanta's Ederson.
Despite his desire to make the move to United, Tielemans wanted to ensure negotiations were carried out 'cleanly and correctly' after being informed of their interest. The 29-year-old was reportedly adamant that he would speak to boss Unai Emery before engaging in talks.
Tielemans' Long-Standing Interest and Villa's Efforts
Tielemans had been linked to United on multiple other occasions but only now has the timing aligned for a move. Even on this occasion, Villa were keen to extend his stay, but it was a straightforward move for the player.
