Jadon Sancho making a permanent return to Borussia Dortmund this summer is now considered a highly realistic prospect, according to fresh reports emerging from Germany. The Bundesliga giants are increasingly warming to the idea of securing the winger's signature on a long-term basis, with club officials having already initiated contact with Sancho's representatives to discuss a potential deal.
Contract Situation and Financial Considerations
Sancho's current contract with Manchester United is set to expire at the conclusion of this season, though the Premier League club retains an option to extend it by an additional year. The 25-year-old has spent the ongoing campaign on loan at Aston Villa, following previous loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.
German newspaper Bild reports that Sancho is apparently willing to accept a significant reduction in his wages to facilitate a move back to Signal Iduna Park. His current salary is believed to be in the region of £250,000 per week, a figure he may need to more than halve to fit within Dortmund's wage structure. The club currently sits second in the Bundesliga table.
Dortmund's Internal Momentum Grows
Sancho is expected to be among Dortmund's top transfer targets for the upcoming window, with many key figures within the club now keen on the move. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl is reportedly leading the charge, while managing director Lars Ricken and head coach Niko Kovac are also said to be warming to the idea of bringing the player back permanently.
The winger remains immensely popular with the Dortmund faithful, having enjoyed a highly successful four-year spell at the club between 2017 and 2021. During that period, he scored an impressive 50 goals, cementing his status as one of Europe's most exciting young talents.
A Career in Need of Revival
Manchester United secured Sancho's services for £73 million in 2021, hoping he would replicate the scintillating form he displayed in Germany. However, he struggled to reach those same heights at Old Trafford. A loan return to Dortmund in the 2023-24 season saw him help the team reach the Champions League final, though he was unable to consistently recapture his prolific goalscoring touch.
Last season, a subsequent loan spell at Chelsea showcased flashes of his undeniable talent, but he ultimately lacked consistent end product, registering five goals and ten assists across 42 appearances in all competitions. He did, however, win the Conference League with Chelsea, scoring as a substitute in their 4-1 final victory over Real Betis. Chelsea later rejected a £25 million obligation to buy him and paid United £5 million to terminate the agreement.
The Path Back to Manchester Appears Blocked
Securing a place back in the Manchester United first team seems a formidable challenge for Sancho. Opportunities were always likely to be scarce after his public falling out with former manager Erik ten Hag. Furthermore, through little fault of his own, he did not fit into the system employed by subsequent manager Ruben Amorim, which did not utilise traditional wingers.
Bild claims that Sancho is acutely aware of the need to get his career back on track swiftly and believes a return to Dortmund represents the ideal environment for him to do so. Juventus also expressed interest in the player over the summer but were ultimately unable to meet his wage demands, even with a proposed pay cut factored into their offer.
United had to contribute approximately £100,000 per week towards Sancho's salary during his loan stint at Dortmund in the 2023-24 campaign, highlighting the financial complexities involved. As the summer transfer window approaches, all signs point towards a concerted effort from Borussia Dortmund to make Jadon Sancho's return a permanent reality.
