Monaco have reportedly revived their interest in Rangers winger Djeidi Gassama with the transfer window approaching its deadline.
Gassama moved from Sheffield Wednesday last summer for a fee around £2.2million and was one of the rare successes for former sporting director Kevin Thelwell during his early time at Ibrox. The wide man scored 10 goals last season during an inconsistent campaign under Russell Martin and Danny Rohl, but has been given a fresh opportunity by Derek McInnes.
Monaco make their move
Following the arrival of Kim Minsu from Girona this week, the path could be opening for Gassama to move to Ligue 1. Foot Mercato report that the player "remains on the radar" of Monaco, with Italian clubs Monza and Parma already seeing offers of €7million (£6million) rejected by Rangers officials.
It is noted that Monaco have "now made their move" and "know where they stand" on the player, having asked Rangers for a price tag. The Light Blues are said to want at least €10million (£8.5million) for Gassama. Rangers are claimed to be "willing to sell" but "have no intention of letting go of a player in good form" for less than their valuation.
McInnes challenge
Speaking earlier this season, McInnes challenged Gassama to stake his claim for a first-team spot, admitting the club was looking to sign more wingers.
He said: "We're continually assessing the squad, but that key position on the right-hand side is pivotal for us. Djeidi Gassama has the potential to be what we want here and we're just looking for that a bit more often. He didn't really play in his natural position for a long period last season. If he wants to play from that left-hand side, he's got to understand what comes with that, like the responsibility to get up and down the pitch and produce at the right moments."
