Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for Werder Bremen striker Nick Woltemade, with the 22-year-old set to become a key addition to Eddie Howe's squad. The German international, who has been valued at around £70 million, rejected a move to Bayern Munich to join the Premier League side, according to sources close to the player.

Woltemade, who stands at 6ft 6in, is known for his graceful dribbling and ability to bring others into play. He scored 17 goals last season, helping Stuttgart win the DFB-Pokal, their first major trophy in 18 years. He also finished as the top scorer at the European Under-21 Championship with six goals, including a hat-trick against Slovenia.

The transfer comes as a surprise to many, with Newcastle's recruiters working quietly to secure the deal. Woltemade is seen as a logical substitute for Alexander Isak, who is expected to lead the line for Newcastle this season. Despite his size, Woltemade is comfortable with the ball at his feet and has a deft touch that makes him a threat in the final third.

Woltemade's rise has been rapid. He made his Bundesliga debut for Werder Bremen in 2020, becoming the club's youngest ever debutant at 17. He was described by former Bayern and Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro as "quiet and shy", but his performances on the pitch have earned him the nickname "Big Nick" among German journalists.

Bayern Munich had been monitoring Woltemade as a potential successor to Harry Kane, but they were unwilling to meet Stuttgart's asking price. Newcastle, however, have shown a willingness to pay the higher figure, which could rise to £70 million including add-ons. The deal is expected to be completed in the coming days, with Woltemade set to sign a long-term contract at St James' Park.
