Mohamed Salah has agreed to join Turkish club Trabzonspor, with the forward set to sign a two-year contract after leaving Liverpool. The Egyptian international parted ways with the Reds at the conclusion of last season, drawing the curtain on nine remarkable years at Anfield.
Salah has since been weighing up his options for the twilight of his career. While Saudi Arabia had long been considered a likely destination, Turkish clubs mounted a determined push to secure his services. Besiktas initially appeared to be frontrunners for his signature, but the Istanbul club publicly declared they were unwilling to break their wage structure to land the winger.
Club confirms negotiations
Trabzonspor subsequently confirmed they had entered into negotiations with Salah, releasing a statement on social media. They stated: "Professional footballer Mohamed Salah, with whom we have begun transfer negotiations, will be at Istanbul Ataturk Airport General Aviation Terminal at 12:00 on Wednesday, August 5."
"The player is scheduled to arrive in Trabzon on the same day in the evening hours. The time and other details regarding the welcome program in Trabzon will be shared with the public through our club's official communication channels during the day."
New teammates and season ahead
A switch to Trabzonspor would see Salah link up with Manchester United's Andre Onana, who has returned to the club on loan for a second stint. Former Manchester City centre-back Stefan Savic is another ex-Premier League name currently plying his trade at the Super Lig outfit.
Trabzonspor finished third last season, eight points adrift of the summit, and have booked their place in next season's Europa League. They last lifted the Turkish title in 2022.
Salah's final season at Liverpool
Salah will be hoping to rediscover his scoring form if and when he does turn out for the side from Trabzon, who are based in north east Turkey. Last year marked the Egyptian's poorest goal return since arriving in England. He managed just 12 goals and was eventually dropped by Arne Slot.
That sparked a public disagreement between the player and his former manager, and Salah's departure from Liverpool ultimately came prematurely. Both parties ultimately opted to part company 12 months earlier than planned. He departed Merseyside having netted 257 goals and registered 120 assists in 442 appearances.
