Newell's Old Boys vice president Juan Manuel Medina has confirmed the club is working to bring Lionel Messi back to his boyhood club in 2027. Speaking to Argentine publication TN, Medina said: 'We are working on Leo playing for Newell's in the first half of 2027.'
The 38-year-old Messi spent six years in Newell's youth system before moving to Barcelona's La Masia, where he became one of football's greatest players. He currently plays for Inter Miami, with a contract running until 2028, but has previously stated his 'dream' to finish his career at Newell's.
Medina described the project as one that 'goes beyond Newell's' and involves the city of Rosario and Argentine football. He added that it depends on what the club can offer in terms of infrastructure and a competitive sports programme.
Newell's has honoured Messi by naming a stand at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa after him. Messi played a friendly for Inter Miami against Newell's in February 2024, which ended 1-1.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner turns 39 in June and is expected to lead defending champions Argentina at this summer's World Cup, though he has not yet confirmed his participation. Messi has won numerous titles, including the World Cup, four Champions Leagues, and two Copa Americas, and recently lifted the MLS Cup in 2025.
