JJ Gabriel turns 16 today after Manchester United refused his request last month to cancel his registration and leave with immediate effect. The teenager can now secure professional representation as he celebrates his 16th birthday, meaning United appear to have run out of time to persuade him to remain at the club.
Transfer request and senior debut hopes
Gabriel sparked controversy last month after submitting a request to terminate his registration immediately, despite having been earmarked for a pathway into Michael Carrick's squad. The gifted youngster was poised to make his senior debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup before his surprising transfer request, which United rejected.
As he was 15 when he initially made his request, Gabriel could not legally be represented by an agent but he now can be. The teenager is also now eligible to join a continental club using his Irish passport, with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona all reportedly interested.
Background and international options
Gabriel has obtained this passport through his father, Joe O'Cearuill, who began his professional career at Arsenal in the mid-2000s and earned two caps for the Republic of Ireland. The youngster also has Cypriot ancestry on his mother's side, giving him several international options and a path to signing for European clubs.
The Daily Mail reported that leading agents Ali Barat and Jorge Mendes are eager to represent Gabriel and facilitate his move to his preferred destination. Barat has intervened on behalf of the player's family to handle the situation and previously required formal authorisation to represent him, but this will no longer be necessary.
Training away from United
In recent weeks, the forward has been undertaking individual training sessions with a private coach in Castelldefels, Barcelona, while seeking to leave United. Gabriel has been absent from training at Carrington since submitting his departure request and continues to stoke speculation while working alongside private coach Jack Hunter in the Catalan capital.
Carrick had previously called for patience regarding Gabriel's situation and insisted the club needed to shield him from media attention. He said: "I'll just repeat what I said: he's a young boy, it's important we don't put anything out here, the exposure and scrutiny we have to be careful. We have to be sensible and think about him. The situation will work itself out."
Compensation and legal considerations
Those comments have swiftly become irrelevant as United appear increasingly powerless to retain the gifted teenager. The Old Trafford outfit remains optimistic about persuading the youngster to reconsider. Nevertheless, reports suggest United's recent downturn in fortunes lies at the heart of Gabriel's determination to depart.
Should the teenager opt for a Spanish side - or venture to Germany - it would constitute a major setback for United. The club would receive approximately £300,000 in compensation should he move overseas, a substantially smaller sum than they would command if he joined an English club instead.
According to The Sun, United are now weighing up regulatory and potentially legal action against anyone who attempts to negotiate Gabriel's exit. It is further claimed that discussions with Real and Bayern have been scheduled, while Barca have publicly denied any interest in acquiring the teenager.
