Manchester United are set to allow James Overy and Louis Jackson to leave the club before the end of the summer transfer window. The departures come as the club looks to trim its squad after a busy period of incomings at Old Trafford.
Youngsters heading for the exit
Overy, an 18-year-old right-back born in Perth, is expected to return to Australia to continue his career with Sydney FC. He previously had a spell with Glory between 2023 and 2024 before joining Newton Abbot Spurs. The teenager represented his country during last season's U20 World Cup and earned his maiden senior call-up in November. Having featured for United's U21s in 2025/26, he was absent as the side opened their Premier League 2 campaign with a 5-0 win over Ipswich on Monday.
Jackson, a 20-year-old defender, is in discussions with St Mirren and is weighing up the possibility of playing Scottish Premiership football this campaign. He is scheduled to undergo a medical with the club on Thursday. A Scottish youth international, Jackson is yet to make his first-team debut for United, having spent last season on loan at Tranmere Rovers and Solihull Moors.
Buyback clauses and left-back search
According to the BBC, both deals will contain buyback clauses that the Red Devils will be able to activate in the future.
Meanwhile, United are exploring a potential move for Alejandro Balde as they seek to resolve their issues at left-back. Luke Shaw, 31, is entering the final year of his deal at Old Trafford, and with limited cover behind him, the club is scouring the market. While concrete interest in Lewis Hall emerged, Newcastle United are unwilling to part with the 21-year-old this summer.
United are now reportedly mulling over a move for Balde, who has fallen out of favour under Hansi Flick at Barcelona. The 22-year-old has reportedly instructed agent Jorge Mendes to source him a new club ahead of the window's closure, with Manchester United understood to be leading the chase.
Reports have also emerged of a last-minute approach for Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga, a player United have been linked with throughout the summer. However, following the recent £70 million signing of Carlos Baleba, it seems unlikely the club will seek further midfield reinforcements.
