Manchester City face the prospect of losing several of their leading players if they are expelled from the Premier League, following the verdict that found them guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought by the league. The decision, announced on Friday, has created significant uncertainty around the club's future.
Appeal and Potential Punishments
City are widely expected to appeal the ruling, having consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the process. Should their appeal fail, a range of punishments could be imposed, including a points deduction or a substantial fine. In the most extreme scenario, they could be removed from the Premier League altogether.
Such an outcome could trigger a mass exodus at the Etihad Stadium if key players decide against competing in England's lower leagues. Several of the Premier League's most prominent clubs would almost certainly look to sign City's top talent in that situation.
United and Arsenal Eye Targets
Manchester United could benefit by signing a left-back to replace Luke Shaw, who will be out of contract at the end of the season. The dream target would be Josko Gvardiol, but United may be more likely to pursue Rayan Ait-Nouri, who they enquired about in the final hours of the summer window. On that occasion they were told no, but the situation could change if City are expelled and Ait-Nouri decides to leave.
Arsenal, meanwhile, could launch a move for Erling Haaland, who has already been linked with the Gunners since the verdict. According to Football Insider, the north London club and Real Madrid are monitoring the Norwegian striker in light of the current situation. Haaland would be a major signing for Arsenal, potentially helping them strengthen their position in the Premier League for years to come.
Liverpool's Interest in Nunes
Liverpool could also look to sign Matheus Nunes following his transition from midfield to right-back. Jeremie Frimpong has struggled since arriving at Anfield last summer, with Dominik Szoboszlai often deputising on the right side of defence. A move for Nunes would allow Szoboszlai to remain in central midfield while replacing Frimpong or providing him with more competition for a starting spot.
Much will depend on City's eventual punishment, which may not be confirmed for several months or even years because of the appeal process. If the guilty verdict is upheld, it would not be surprising to see a number of high-profile players move to other Premier League clubs.
