Current Priorities and Potential Signings
Left-back and midfield remain the positions needing attention before the September 1 deadline. Despite little encouragement so far, United's senior correspondent Tyrone Marshall suggests two more players could arrive: a left-back and a central midfielder.
Marshall believes Andrey Santos, signed for £85m along with Youri Tielemans, fits the profile of an elite No.6. He expects Santos to be a regular starter under Michael Carrick, as United sought technical midfielders with mobility.
Player Performances and Squad Depth
Kobbie Mainoo is identified as having the most to prove this season, following a strong second half of last season but a difficult World Cup. With increased midfield competition, he must secure his place.
For Bruno Fernandes' potential absence, Shea Lacey has impressed as a No.10 in pre-season and is considered a real option. Matheus Cunha is another candidate, though he may play on the left.
Left-Back Situation and Lewis Hall Links
Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches last season, but a new left-back is deemed increasingly important. Lewis Hall remains a target, but Newcastle have no need to sell and are reluctant to lose another key player.
Marshall notes Hall is open to a move, but it would require a transfer request and an exceptional offer. He suggests United might sign a lower-profile left-back this summer and revisit Hall in 2027 when Shaw's contract expires.
