Man United show they've learnt lesson with strong Bruno Fernandes stance
Man United learn lesson with strong Fernandes stance

Manchester United have made it clear that Bruno Fernandes is not for sale at any price, swiftly ending Galatasaray's audacious attempt to sign the captain this summer. The Reds' decisive stance marks a stark contrast to last year's uncertainty, when Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal's interest led to a prolonged 'will he, won't he' saga.

Last Summer's Saga

In the previous transfer window, Al Hilal pulled out all the stops to sign Fernandes, and for a time it seemed United might cash in. Eventually, manager Ruben Amorim convinced the 31-year-old he was still wanted at Old Trafford, and Fernandes stayed put. However, the aftermath of the saga lingered into the new season.

In December 2025, Fernandes told Portuguese TV channel Canal 11: "From the club’s side, I felt a bit like, ‘If you leave, it’s not so bad for us’. It hurts me a bit. I was valued, and what values me most has to be my club, although lately I feel like I’m on thin ice."

This revelation came just two months after Fernandes had told reporters at Carrington that he was confident the club wanted him to stay. He explained that he had spoken with the manager and felt part of the project, but made clear he would have left had the club indicated they wanted to cash in.

A Strong Statement This Time

On Monday, Galatasaray attempted to lure Fernandes to Turkey, with the Istanbul club looking to make a statement. Favourable tax rates have attracted several stars to Turkey this summer, including United's Andre Onana and Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah, who have both signed for Trabzonspor.

Unlike last year, when United allowed speculation to build, the Reds quickly snuffed out Galatasaray's hopes. On Monday, they made it clear that Fernandes is not for sale and will not be leaving before the window closes on September 1.

This strong statement leaves Fernandes in no doubt about his Old Trafford future and immediately ends the debate around his potential exit. While such clarity is only afforded to certain players, United were right to ensure Fernandes receives that certainty.

Impact on the Season

Fernandes was integral for United last season, and his Premier League record for assists, set last season, will stand for a while. With Champions League football back on the agenda this season, Fernandes can be that spark for the Reds.
