Manchester United could revive their pursuit of one summer target in the January transfer window, while questions continue to be raised over JJ Gabriel's future at Old Trafford.
JJ Gabriel behaviour called out
Former Manchester United assistant and scout Mick Brown has suggested JJ Gabriel is damaging certain relationships at Old Trafford. Amid speculation regarding a switch to another of Europe's elite clubs, it's alleged that the dynamic between Gabriel and his under-21 teammates has deteriorated.
It recently came to light that United rejected Gabriel's request to have his registration cancelled, as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all reported to be interested in his signature. Gabriel, 15, had been earmarked for a breakthrough under Michael Carrick, but Brown has hinted his current standing within the youth setup is doing little to strengthen his position.
"There is the suggestion, of course, that Man United might be better off without JJ Gabriel," he told Football Insider. "Regardless of his obvious talent, this situation has called into question his character and that of the people around him, and is that the type of player you want around the club?
"It's sad, because the boy is very talented and it's a shame how this situation has played out in recent times. Interestingly enough, since all of this has kicked off, I've watched him closely playing for the academy sides and one thing that interests me is his teammates' reactions.
"When somebody scores for the Under-21s, all the players go running over, they're jumping and hugging each other and all of that. But a few times when JJ Gabriel has scored, yes they go and celebrate with him, give him a high five, and then they all trot back and he doesn't seem to get the same reception.
"Now, I might be reading too much into it, but from my point of view I have to wonder whether his actions have caused issues in the dressing room."
Brown continued by saying "it's an arrogance and attitude thing," observing that Gabriel is already training with the senior squad. Given everything he's been afforded already, Brown questioned whether his under-21 colleagues have been left sensing they're viewed as inferior in Gabriel's estimation.
"Like I said, it's a shame and maybe I'm reading too much into it," he continued. "But it does add up to that idea that maybe they're better off without him."
Balde tipped for January transfer
United could have an opportunity to secure Alejandro Balde from Barcelona in January following his demotion at the Camp Nou. The Spanish left-back was strongly linked with a switch to Old Trafford before eventually opting to stay put and compete for his position.
Nevertheless, that contest has proved unsuccessful so far, given that Balde has featured for only 12 minutes across all competitions. Barca manager Hansi Flick has elevated academy graduate Xavi Espart to the starting berth at left-back, while summer acquisition Joao Cancelo ranks second in the hierarchy.
Mundo Deportivo has reported that being overlooked could prompt Balde to reassess his situation this winter. That is despite alleged assurances from agent Jorge Mendes that Balde would be "fine in the future."
United were connected with several left-back targets throughout the summer but ultimately failed to strengthen the position. This left Carrick leaning heavily on Luke Shaw, with Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Amass serving as alternative choices.
Nevertheless, there have been fresh calls for new additions in that role following a string of unconvincing performances from Shaw this campaign. With Balde struggling to force his way into the starting XI at Barcelona, a transfer to Old Trafford could be revisited come January.
