Alexander Isak has informed Newcastle United that he wishes to explore a transfer away from the club this summer, according to Mail Sport. The Swedish striker did not travel with the squad for their pre-season tour of the Far East after leaving training with a thigh injury on Monday.
Newcastle's hierarchy are aware of Isak's desire to consider his options, with Liverpool preparing a British record offer in the region of £150 million. The 25-year-old has three years remaining on his contract, and chief executive Darren Eales had indicated in March that a new deal would be discussed at the end of the season.
However, Isak and his representatives are currently unwilling to commit to fresh terms, prioritising Liverpool's interest. Newcastle's owners and head coach Eddie Howe are reluctant to sell and would prefer to negotiate a new contract, even if that meant a move next summer.
Isak missed Newcastle's 4-0 defeat to Celtic at the weekend, with Howe stating the player had been allowed to return home amid speculation over his future and to manage his minutes. The club have attributed his absence from the Far East tour to a minor thigh issue.
Since joining Newcastle, Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 matches, establishing himself as one of the most sought-after strikers in world football. Any sale would surpass the £116 million Liverpool paid for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen last month, setting a new British transfer record.
