Liverpool have received an official approach from Valencia to sign Harvey Elliott before the summer transfer deadline passes. The La Liga side are in 'advanced talks' about a loan move for the England youth international, according to Matteo Moretto.
Elliott has spoken with Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola and asked to leave Anfield to join Valencia, with optimism between all parties. The 23-year-old spent last season on loan with Aston Villa but saw his game time limited due to a clause in his loan agreement, which would have turned into a permanent move.
Villa declined permanent deal
Unai Emery's side chose not to sign the midfielder on the £35m permanent deal, and he returned to Anfield earlier this summer. The Villa boss admitted that the lack of game time was affecting Elliott last season, as he made just nine appearances across all competitions – one short of the ten which would have activated the clause.
Fabrizio Romano claims Elliott has three proposals on the table, but Valencia are in talks to try and win the race for his signature.
Elliott's Liverpool career
Elliott has made 149 appearances for the Reds since joining the club from Fulham in 2019 and was a key figure in Jurgen Klopp's final season at the club. He made 53 appearances in all competitions during the 2023-24 campaign, up from 46 the year prior.
However, he fell out of favour under Arne Slot and his time at Anfield looks to be coming to an end. He was left out of Iraola's squad for the 2-2 draw with Newcastle, and the Reds boss gave a damning verdict saying he preferred other options.
Iraola explains decision
Speaking ahead of the clash with Newcastle, Iraola said: "With Harvey, with [Luke] Chambers, with some of the players that I decided – because I can only choose 20 – to leave out, it’s a matter of finding the balance on the bench."
"In Harvey’s case, he’s trying, he’s improving every week, but I still prefer other options. Probably I was in doubt with James McConnell in terms of getting into the squad, and I decided to put James in the squad. But it’s another new week, new chances for everyone, and they have to keep that mentality."
