Liverpool are reportedly set to sanction the sale of midfielder Stefan Bajcetic before the transfer window closes on Tuesday. The 21-year-old impressed under Jurgen Klopp but has since endured a torrid spell with injuries that prolonged his absence from the first-team squad. He is out of the picture under Andoni Iraola, and the new head coach is prepared to let Bajcetic leave.
Buy-back clause included in deal
The club, however, have been clever and have made sure to insert a buy-back clause in a proposed move to Celta Vigo, where Bajcetic has played previously. The Athletic reported the clause while outlets in Spain claim that Vigo have landed Bajcetic for just £1.5million, which could prove to be a bargain.
Bajcetic's contract at Liverpool is set to run out at the close of this season, and he has not featured for the club since May 2024. His most recent competitive outing came in May 2025 while on loan at Las Palmas.
Midfield situation at Anfield
Liverpool's midfield has remained largely unchanged this summer, with Andoni Iraola instead focusing his recruitment efforts on the defensive and attacking departments. Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are the trio most frequently deployed by the Reds in central midfield.
Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni also remain at the club, though both sit lower in the pecking order. Academy product Curtis Jones was allowed to depart for Inter Milan earlier this summer.
Bajcetic's Liverpool career
Bajcetic made his Premier League debut as a 17-year-old and was widely regarded as a prospect of enormous potential, yet persistent injury problems prevented him from fulfilling that promise. Klopp handed the teenager his opportunity and was instantly won over by his ability and resilience.
He said: "So far there were no signs we have to rest him, which is good for us. Stefan played exceptional and not because he is only 18, he just played exceptional."
"Top talent, super player. Played really good for us so far. Since he is with us it is a pure joy to work with him. I think the mix of Serbia and Spain is a good one for football. If you meet him he is a top, intelligent boy and it is a joy to work together."
Bajcetic has accumulated 22 appearances throughout his spell at Liverpool, though 19 of those came during his breakthrough campaign under Klopp in 2022/23.
