Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is actively working to bolster his squad this January, with his first target identified as Crystal Palace winger Romain Esse. The Sky Blues, who currently sit eight points clear at the Championship summit, are keen to secure a loan deal for the young attacker to enhance their promotion credentials.
Esse Emerges as Key Target for Sky Blues
According to reports from The Telegraph, discussions have already been opened between the clubs regarding a temporary move for the 21-year-old. Romain Esse, an England Under-21 international, joined Palace from Millwall for a fee of £14.5 million in January 2025 after impressing in the second tier.
However, his time at Selhurst Park has been challenging, with the player making just two Premier League appearances this season. His limited opportunities are set to diminish further with Crystal Palace poised to announce the £35 million signing of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur, pushing Esse further down the pecking order.
Coventry's Promotion Push Needs Fresh Impetus
While Coventry City's position at the top of the Championship looks commanding, Lampard is not taking anything for granted. The team has lost only three of its 25 league games but has not won a match by more than a single goal since November.
Lampard acknowledged this following a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic on New Year's Day, stating, "We are not as clinical as we were earlier in the season but that was always going to come." The former Chelsea boss clearly believes fresh blood is needed to ensure his side maintains its momentum and secures a return to the Premier League.
The club has also faced interest in its own forwards, with West Ham United previously linked with Haji Wright and Ellis Simms. However, the Hammers are now looking at other targets, which may allow Coventry to keep their key strike partnership intact for the promotion run-in.
Competition and Context for the Potential Deal
Coventry is not the only Championship club interested in securing Esse's services, but they are considered front-runners, and Lampard is hopeful of concluding a deal promptly. Palace's willingness to loan out the player was evident as he made only a brief cameo from the bench in their 1-1 draw with Fulham on January 2nd.
The Eagles also suffered an injury scare to midfielder Will Hughes in that match, with manager Oliver Glasner noting the player felt "fatigue everywhere around the hip." Despite this, the impending arrival of Johnson makes Esse's short-term departure a logical step for all parties involved.
