Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle has ruled out a summer move for Lewis Hall to Manchester United, responding with a blunt 'No chance! No chance!' when asked about the left-back's future.
The 38-year-old, who replaced Eddie Howe as manager this summer, was speaking after his side's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St James' Park on Sunday. Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel had put it to him that his former club are interested in the full-back.
Hall's future under scrutiny
Hall has been linked with a move to Old Trafford as Manchester United look to add competition for Luke Shaw. The need for new arrivals appears pressing for Michael Carrick's side after a 2-0 defeat at Hull City to start the season.
Newcastle have lost a string of key players this summer, including Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, and do not want to sell any other important squad members.
Transfer window expectations
Jaissle expects significant movement in the transfer market before the window closes on September 3, with new arrivals expected but also potential departures.
'I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it's depending also if players are leaving as well,' he told Sky Sports ahead of the Liverpool game on how many new signings he is expecting. 'For sure, there will be adjustments made, the needs are clear. The management knows about the needs and we are all aligned.'
'We will use the remaining time [in the transfer window] in the best possible way, but also we trust the players who are already here.'
New signings on show
After the game, Jaissle was again asked about upcoming business and said he wants more players, suggesting the number of signings he wants can be counted on one hand.
'I hope so, today the lads were amazing, a young squad but we have some needs we know internally and we keep that internally,' he said. 'You can count them on one hand.'
Newcastle have spent well over £150 million on new signings this summer, focusing on young players with no Premier League experience. New arrivals Amar Dedic, Sean Steur and Lukas Hornicek were in the starting XI on Sunday, while Aladji Bamba came off the bench for his debut.
