Liverpool's first home pre-season game under Andoni Iraola ended in a 3-2 defeat to Monaco, a result that underscored the need for further reinforcements in the transfer market.
While pre-season results are often downplayed, Iraola will have taken note of the performance. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz both scored, providing a positive sign for the attacking partnership that cost a combined £241 million. Young defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe impressed, and Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk showed signs of regaining match fitness. Van Dijk conceded a penalty, but that is unlikely to be a major concern at this stage.
Depth concerns exposed
Despite the positives, the match highlighted the squad's lack of depth, particularly in midfield and attack. Monaco's second-half comeback exposed the limitations of the current options beyond the first-choice XI. Iraola acknowledged that the team's performance dipped in the second half, saying: "I think it was quite similar to the game we played against Leeds. I think we played a really good first half, especially the first 30 minutes, but right now, probably, we don't have much more in terms of the level required."
New signing Victor Munoz impressed on his Anfield debut, and Rio Ngumoha continued to show promise. However, with Lewis Koumas and Ndukwe set to miss the next match due to a lack of a work permit and readiness respectively, the need for additional attacking options is clear.
Transfer priorities
Securing deals for Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye would significantly bolster the forward line, though time is running out before the season begins. The imminent arrival of Ronald Araujo is expected to strengthen the defense, but further additions are considered essential to support Iraola's plans.
While the starting XI is taking shape, the squad's overall depth remains a concern. Addressing these gaps in the transfer market will be crucial for Liverpool to compete effectively in the upcoming campaign.
