Manchester United have reportedly made Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali their primary transfer target this summer, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio. The Red Devils are said to be prioritising the Italian international over Atalanta's Ederson as new head coach Michael Carrick looks to rebuild his midfield.
The report claims that Newcastle have a gentleman's agreement with Tonali allowing him to leave if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League. With the Magpies sitting 10 points off the top four and facing a potential bottom-half finish, the 26-year-old could be available for a fee between €80 million (£69m) and €100 million (£86m).
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has previously dismissed speculation about Tonali's future, insisting the player remains committed to the club. Speaking in February, Howe said: "He's very happy and committed... Having discussed things with him yesterday, he's absolutely fine." However, with Arsenal also reportedly interested, United are now pushing to secure a deal that Carrick specifically wants.
Di Marzio suggests there is a "good chance" a transfer will go through this summer, though the final fee remains uncertain. Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 for a reported £55m and has since made 40 appearances for the club.
