Rio Ferdinand has accused Crystal Palace of 'bullying' Marc Guehi into staying at the club, despite strong interest from Liverpool. The former Manchester United defender argued that Guehi's professional conduct contrasted sharply with Alexander Isak's approach, which secured the Newcastle striker a British record move to Liverpool.
Guehi, 25, missed out on a £35 million deadline day switch to Anfield after months of speculation. He is now expected to leave Palace either on a free transfer next summer or for a reduced fee in January. Ferdinand claimed Palace exploited Guehi's non-confrontational nature, saying: 'Because they knew he wasn't gonna fight, he's not that way. So the club bully him!'
Isak forced his move from Newcastle by refusing to train and causing disruption, a tactic Ferdinand suggested Guehi could have employed. The defender maintained his professionalism, training and playing as usual, but ultimately saw his 'dream move' to the Premier League champions blocked. Ferdinand questioned which approach is right, noting Guehi 'dances and tip-toes around' transfers while Isak 'muscled his way out'.
Ferdinand claimed Palace were aware for some time that Guehi, a product of Chelsea's academy, wished to leave. The Eagles attempted to sign Brighton's Igor Julio on deadline day, but the Brazilian chose West Ham on loan instead. Palace did bring in 19-year-old Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse, though he is considered a development player.
Guehi, who previously received support from former Palace boss Roy Hodgson, is now almost certain to leave next year. BBC Sport reported he desired 'Liverpool or nothing'. Ferdinand's assessment that Palace 'bullied' their captain into staying may resonate with some supporters, but the club retained a key player who recently guided them to FA Cup glory and European qualification.
