Formula 2 race-winner Rafael Camara believes his Formula 1 dream is close as he continues to impress in his debut F2 season. The 21-year-old Brazilian, part of the Ferrari driver academy, is currently third in the drivers' standings, 22 points off the lead, after winning the Formula 3 title last year.
Haas driver options under review
Camara has been linked with a 2027 F1 promotion with Haas, who are evaluating their driver lineup for next year. The team's current driver Esteban Ocon has scored only three points this season compared to the 18 amassed by team-mate Oliver Bearman, and with his contract expiring at the end of the year, his future is uncertain.
Haas are understood to have tested several drivers, including Camara and McLaren reserve Leonardo Fornaroli, last year's F2 champion. Their own reserve Jack Doohan is also a contender, while Toyota factory driver Ryo Hirakawa has publicly expressed his desire to secure the seat.
Camara focused on title fight
Camara and Fornaroli are thought to be the front-runners, with Haas' long-standing relationship with Ferrari potentially giving Camara an edge. Speaking about the speculation, Camara said it is "good to see" but stressed his focus remains on his current championship battle.
"You don't really know at the moment, but it's nice to have this and to see that the dream is close. But, at the same time, you don't want to get too much into that because I’m still in a very important championship, and if you do well, most likely you're going to get a chance," he said.
"So, on my side, I’m just really focusing on this year. Not many people get this opportunity, especially being in a team that's one of the best in Formula 2 and having the chance to fight for the championship. So I would just want to make the most of it and make sure that I enjoy every moment."
