Everton's summer transfer window has kicked into life this week, with the club close to signing Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney and in talks with Chelsea to bring back winger Tyrique George on a permanent deal. However, both Joe Thomas and Paul Wheelock believe the priority remains the same: a new right-back.
Joe Thomas: Right-Back is the Biggest Need
Joe Thomas argues that despite the progress on Hackney and George, the club cannot go into another transfer window without signing a right-back. He calls it the biggest area in need of improvement and the easiest way to genuinely improve the team, both going forward and at the back. Thomas notes that while a defensive midfielder would also be a good addition, the right-back position is critical. He worries that without a signing, Everton may line up with Jake O'Brien on the right against Crystal Palace, which would prevent O'Brien from focusing on his best position as a centre-back.
Paul Wheelock: Right-Back Should Be Next Priority
Paul Wheelock agrees that after securing Hackney and potentially George, the next priority must be a new right-back. He mentions several names linked to the club, including Guela Doue, Djed Spence, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raoul Bellanova, Ben White, and Brooke Norton-Cuffy. Wheelock emphasizes that recruiting a specialist right-back would ease fan concerns, especially if done before pre-season. He also notes that the club may need to move on some current midfielders and that a centre-forward could be a target, but only if Beto or Thierno Barry leaves.
Other Squad Needs
Both journalists acknowledge other areas needing work. Thomas highlights the need for a powerhouse midfielder to cover the number eights, while Wheelock mentions the possibility of a defensive midfielder (No.6) given links to Pape Gueye and Mandela Keita. However, the consensus is that right-back is the most pressing issue.
