England's World Cup preparations have been hit by a right-back crisis ahead of their round of 32 match against DR Congo on Wednesday. Jarell Quansah suffered an ankle injury during the win over Panama, leaving manager Thomas Tuchel with limited options for the position.
Injury Woes at Right-Back
Quansah was forced off against Panama and is now doubtful for the DR Congo clash. The injury compounds an already depleted right-back pool, with Tino Livramento ruled out before the tournament due to a calf problem and Reece James struggling with a hamstring issue that kept him out of the Panama game.
James, who started England's first two matches, has a history of hamstring problems and is expected to miss the DR Congo match. Tuchel may have to deploy Djed Spence, primarily a left-back, or shift centre-back Ezri Konsa to the right, with John Stones returning to the central defence.
Tuchel's Concerns and Solutions
Speaking about Quansah's injury, Tuchel said: “A classic ankle twist and he is in pain. He said he had it before and it is a matter of days. He has his leg up high and in ice.” The German boss admitted concern over the right-back situation: “Naturally, of course [I am worried]. We have another injury in the position. It will be a tight race for Reece James and a tight race for Jarell Quansah, but it is our job to find solutions and we will do.”
Midfield Boost with Rice Return
In better news, Declan Rice is available after being rested against Panama. His return strengthens the midfield, where Tuchel must also decide between Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke on the right wing, and Anthony Gordon or Marcus Rashford on the left.
Predicted Lineup and Match Details
Predicted England XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Konsa, Stones, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane. The match kicks off at 5pm BST on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at Atlanta Stadium.
