Kevin De Bruyne has backed Gabriel Jesus to make a major impact at Napoli should the Brazilian forward leave Arsenal this summer. The former Manchester City star, now in his second season at Napoli, told Corriere dello Sport that Jesus would add quality to the Serie A side.
De Bruyne's verdict on Jesus
“What does he bring? Quality,” De Bruyne said. “Quality in attack on the ball, in hold-up play and in the build-up. He is probably a profile we do not have, different from Rasmus or Lorenzo. If he arrives, he can help us. Also with his experience: he knows how to win. It is important, we'll see what happens.”
Jesus, 29, has not played a minute for Arsenal this season, having been left out of Mikel Arteta’s squads for the Community Shield win against Manchester City and the opening day victory over Coventry. Premier League sides Everton and Ipswich are among those interested, while Napoli have also identified Chelsea’s Marc Guiu as an alternative.
Arteta on squad limits
Asked about Jesus’ future, Arteta said: “It's really sad not to have their ability. I have been fighting with the Premier League to extend [the squad], to accommodate more players. It's always tough. They deserve to be in the squad, there is no question. Ethan [Nwaneri], as well. Marli [Salmon], as well, has had a hot preseason with us. Hopefully we can change that rule, and players can be an option to play, and contribute to the team as much as possible.”
Jesus joined Arsenal in a £50m move in 2022 but has made only 123 appearances due to injuries, scoring 32 times. He might not be the only departure from the Emirates before next week’s deadline, with compatriot Gabriel Martinelli also linked with an exit. Saudi side Al-Hilal have reportedly agreed a £50m deal with the North London club, which would represent a record sale.
Alvarez uncertainty
Should both Jesus and Martinelli leave, Arsenal could move to bolster their attacking options. Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez continues to be linked with a move. He is embroiled in a bitter argument with his current employers, having been loudly jeered by Atletico fans, while the club have criticised Barcelona for their behaviour as they attempt to sign the forward. Alvarez has also not trained over the past couple of days, citing illness.
