Michael Carrick has left the door open for Harry Amass to potentially leave Manchester United before the transfer deadline. The teenage left-back has been linked with a possible exit from Old Trafford for several weeks as the club looks to cash in on more academy graduates.
Pre-season and Under-21 action
Amass featured for United during pre-season but was not in the squad for last weekend’s shock 2-0 defeat away at newly-promoted Hull on the first day of the new Premier League campaign. Instead, he started and played the full 90 minutes for Adam Lawrence’s Under-21s on Monday as they began the Premier League 2 season with a 5-0 demolition of Ipswich at The Progress With Unity Stadium.
Asked about Amass’s future again ahead of the summer window closing at 11pm BST on Tuesday night (September 1), Carrick said on Friday: “It comes to this stage and this is the stage of the window, there is always different scenarios. We try and do the best for each individual player while keeping the group strong. We’ve been really pleased with Harry, he had a really good season that didn't end so well with the injury, he’s done really well in pre-season.”
Incomings and expected exits
It remains to be seen if United will make any more signings before the deadline, having welcomed Cameroon international Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a £70million deal this week, following the earlier summer arrivals of fellow midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, plus goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The club are believed to have been looking for a new long-term left-back successor to Luke Shaw amid Amass’s expected exit, with links to the likes of Newcastle star Lewis Hall, Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, RB Leipzig captain David Raum and Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas.
United do appear set to sanction a raft of further exits to follow those of Casemiro, Rasmus Hojlund, Altay Bayindir, Tyler Fredricson, Radek Vitek, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia. Fiorentina are understood to be in talks over a move for Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee on an initial season-long loan that includes the option for a permanent transfer, while academy graduate midfielder Toby Collyer is reported to be joining former loan club West Brom for an initial £3m.
Loan and permanent moves
The Athletic report that United believe the total value of the Collyer deal could rise as high as £7.6m with add-ons, with the Red Devils also inserting a 40 per cent sell-on clause. BBC Sport claim that midfielder Dan Gore is in advanced talks over joining League One side Luton on loan, with a move also expected to be found for Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon.
Earlier on Friday, St Mirren boss Craig McLeish confirmed that the Scottish Premiership club were close to signing young United defender Louis Jackson on a permanent transfer, having already loaned Liverpool right-back Calvin Ramsay this week.
